Rx2BFIT Reviews — Consultation Question List

Which questions should I prioritize in a first consultation?

Start with the recommendation and its reason

Explain your top concern and ask what the clinician needs to learn before recommending a plan. If a specific service is proposed, ask why it fits your history and goal, what alternatives exist, and what would change the recommendation. AHRQ and MedlinePlus both encourage patients to prepare questions; bringing a short prioritized list helps ensure the most consequential decisions are discussed while there is time.

Ask what evidence supports the precise intervention, which benefits are plausible, what uncertainty remains, and which risks matter for you. Include the possibility of doing nothing for now or continuing existing care. If a test is suggested, ask what its result would change.

Ask about the whole course

Find out who conducts each visit, how progress will be measured, when a reassessment happens, and whom to contact with a concern. Ask what would lead to stopping or changing the plan. Rx2BFIT’s new-patient page describes monitoring, but the detailed schedule belongs in your individual explanation.

Finish with practical terms: what is included in the quote, what is billed separately, how many office visits are likely, and what written records you will receive. Repeat the plan back in your own words and correct misunderstandings before leaving. If the clinician cannot answer a question yet, record when and by whom it will be answered; uncertainty is preferable to an invented assurance.

If time is short, ask which single unresolved question most affects the recommendation and when it can be answered. A focused follow-up is better than leaving with a long list that has no owner or date.
